Recently, I've been exploring some of the newest art styles to have sprung up since the pandemic, and judging from what I've seen art is beginning to evolve and change. Among the latest and greatest of the experimental new wave is the Jelly art style itself.
In terms of vibes and aesthetics, this style to me is essentially what would happen if Studio Ghibli & the entire cottagecore aesthetic fused and created an underground art style. Jelly art in a nutshell is very simple to look at and there are no needless complexities required to understand and digest each piece of artwork done with the style.
Moreover, each piece has a strict uniformity to it which sees all the warm lazy comfort, and serene energy transferred over regardless of who the artist happens to be.
Most of the time characters created through the style are heavily inspired by anime, are all female with facial piercings & big doe eyes, and nothing beyond headshots are rendered. Despite all of the simplicity that I previously mentioned, I also believe that in the case of Jellyart, this is a double-edged sword.
Because variety is pretty much non-existent things can become dull quite quickly. At present no one who has helped popularize the style online is too focused on pushing the boundaries of what jellyart can be nor progress it to the point where it's reached its maximum in terms of potential & global recognition within the mainstream art world.
Aside from the stagnation that Jellyart is experiencing at the moment, the potential is still blazing brightly because anyone who's familiarized themselves with the style will know that it expresses far more than just softness, feminity, and rogueish beauty.
Jellyart also conveys a tinge of subtle horror & anguish on a count of the women displayed in each piece looking to be emotionally, physically, & mentally exhausted while others appear to look downright disenchanted, sick, and depressed.
There's a lot that I could say about this for one despite all of the grandiose beauty there's a deep flowing undercurrent of pain & suffering which mirrors the United pain and suffering being experienced by younger generations as they navigate a world on the cusp of implosion and total economic decay.
Similarly, you could also take a more feminist approach and say that the expressions of jellyarts medley of characters get its origin from the everyday despair, pain, and disenchantment that just gets served up with the fries and a coke when you are born a female.
To keep it a buck with you, no amount of gender privilege or flash-in-the-pan star treatment ever be able to make up for all of that…not while domestic abuse/weaponized incompetence, femicide, predatorial mutilation /dismemberment, sexual assault, and things like stalking still exist.
Nonetheless, either way, you wanna dissect it or wanna interpret this jelly art has an astounding duality striking the perfect balance between light and dark, heaven in hell. In my opinion, there aren't a lot of art styles out there that can do this so seamlessly or quite as uniquely.
Because of this jellyart needs to be developed with care, focus, and a sense of artistic adventure and bravery because despite all of its flaws it's a rarity & something the art world perhaps only discovers once every couple of generations If lucky.
